The Investigative Court in Almaty chose a measure of restraint in the form of detention for two months to a civil activist Kosay Makhanbaev, who was suspected under the article “Mass riots” in the case of January events. This was reported to Azattyk in the press service of the Court of Almaty.Previously, Kosai Makhanbaev was already in the investigative insulator and announced the use of torture to him.

To the question of the reasons for the return of the activist to the investigative insulator in the City Court replied that “in the interests of the investigation, the information is not subject to disclosure.”

The lawyer of Makhanbaev, Ainara Aidarkhanov, reports to Azattyk that on June 16 at 22 hours 10 minutes, he was supposed to leave the special receiver for administratively convicted due to 15 days of arrest.

The lawyer said that the court’s decision would be appealed, however, she noted, had not yet received a court decision on a change in preventive measure.

She believes that the court to change the preventive measure Kosayu Makhanbaev could deliberately carry out in a hurry before the expiration of his administrative arrest.

“When he was taken away \ [from the special reception of ], three cars drove in different directions, no one knew which car he was in,” says Ainara Aidarkhanova.

Kosai Makhanbaev was detained during the January events and was tortured in custody in the investigative insulator of Almaty. He is charged with an article by the Criminal Code “Mass riots”.After torture and hospitalization, he was changed by the measure of restraint to the “subscription of the lower away”.

The victims of torture and unreasonable investigation methods expressed concern that, after several months, the investigation did not advance and that the perpetrators in torture may evade responsibility.

Since April, a group of several dozen people who survived the torture has repeatedly come to the building of the Almaty prosecutor’s office and demanded a fair investigation of January events and urged the authorities to hold the perpetrators in torture in relation to detainees and shooting at civilians.

After that, in early June, the Almaty administrative court arrested Kosai Makhanbaev for 15 days on charges of violating the order and organizing and holding peace meetings.Supporters of the activist protested the court decision before the court building.

Aydarkhanov’s lawyer believes that he was given the most severe punishment under the Administrative Code - 15 days of arrest, ignoring the fact that he was first brought to administrative responsibility. The court left the appeal of lawyers unchanged.
