Kazakhstan Prosecutor General's Office: 232 People Died in January Events; 6 More Died from Torture

In the January events, 232 people were killed, another 6 from torture, said aset Gindaliev, deputy general of Kazakhstan’s prosecutor on June 29 on the sidelines of the Mazhilis.The total number of dead, according to official figures, is 238 people.

Aset Chindaliev also today confirmed the previously voiced information that 9 employees were arrested on suspicion of torture.Of these, 8 KNB officers and one policeman.In total, 15 people are suspected of committing torture and unreasonable investigation methods.

Earlier, the authorities of Kazakhstan also reported 230 dead during the January events and announced eight criminal cases in January events related to causing death to a person.On March 14, the head of the anti -corruption service, Olzhas Bektenov at the plenary meeting of the Mazhilis, stated that eight criminal cases related to causing death were transferred to special prosecutors.Of these, there are three in East Kazakhstan, two in the Almaty region and two more in Almaty.

On June 20, representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office reported the completion of investigative actions against two employees of the KNB Department of the Almaty region.They are suspected of applying a beating for a detained person who entailed his death.

The Prosecutor General’s Office also reported that 25 people were recognized as victims of torture affairs using a hot steam iron during the investigation of the January events in the Almaty region.

Thousands of people were detained in connection with January events in Kazakhstan.Against the background of the stream of complaints of the authorities of Kazakhstan, they stated that more than 200 cases of “inappropriate methods of investigation.”The victims of torture affairs expressed concern that the investigation was not progressing.Since April, a group of several dozen people who survived torture has repeatedly come to the building of the Almaty prosecutor’s office called the authorities to hold guilty of torture accountable.After these requirements, in early June, one of the victims of torture affairs was first subjected to administrative arrest for 15 days, then placed in custody for two months.

By this day, the authorities still have not published the names of the victims of the January events.On June 5, on the day of the referendum on amendments to the Constitution, President Kasim-Zhomart Tokaev promised that the list of those who died during the January events would be published, but did not specify the deadlines.

The authorities rejected the calls of human rights organizations for an international investigation.
