Azamat Batyrbayev, 38, a father of five from Kapal village in Almaty Province, was detained for the first time in his home on the evening of January 10 on suspicion of participating in mass riots. Already on January 11, he was hospitalized, his wife, Bakyt Batyrbayeva, told Vlast.
“On January 22, 2022, he was detained in connection with an attack on law enforcement officers during mass riots in Taldykorgan. On January 23, during interrogation, he testified that internal affairs officers had injured him on January 10. According to this statement of Batyrbayev, the Anti-Corruption Service for the Almaty region opened a criminal case on the fact of torture. Currently, an investigation is underway,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said in a statement.
He was tortured heavily, cauterized with a hot iron.
Lawyer Bauyrzhan Azanov defends Batyrbayev. He said that his client had officially filed a complaint of torture in the building of the Police Department of the Almaty region and the temporary detention center of the Taldykorgan Internal Affairs Department. Thus, Batyrbayev is now a participant in two criminal cases: in the first case – on torture – he is a victim. In the second – a suspect under Article 272, part 2, “Participation in mass riots.
