Kosay Mahanbaev

Kosay Mahanbaev like many others in January 2022, protested peacefully in Almaty when he was
shot 3 times while the ex- doctor tried to help a wounded protester. He was hospitalized only to be
detained in a few days by militarized forces of Kazakh ‘law enforcement’ in a highly publicized raid
on a City Hospital 12 in Almaty. Kosay and ca 40 others were moved to detention facility SI- 19 not fit
for detainees in such serious conditions. Kosay and other detainees said that the next few days were
pure hell- they were subjected to beatings, inhumane and derogatory treatment as well as torture.
Prosecutors charged him and others with rioting and put him under 2 months arrest justifying it
with ‘suspicions of committal of serious crime’ and ‘likelihood of continued criminal activity if
released‘. Kosay was incensed by the horrendou treatment he received and started to seek justice
petitioning and appealing to Kazakh authorities. The latter did not tolerate this for too long and on
2 nd of June arrested him once for 2 weeks administrative sentence and extended further. Kosay
remains in Jail to this day .He is physically weakened through poorly treated gunshot wounds and
torture injuries. He eats very little food in confinement due to its very poor quality. He is under a
constant risk of torture in the facilities where he was already inhumanely, which in itself puts a
pressure on him.
