Alibek Kopbolganov, a father of three minor children, a resident of Atyrau, arrived in Almaty on January 1, 2022, to begin work on the construction of a cottage settlement on January 4. On January 6, 2022, the boss disbanded the workers, advising them to go home due to the “difficult situation.” It was not possible to leave Almaty since planes did not fly, trains did not travel, so he stayed in a rented apartment, which was located next to the square in front of the akimat. According to the widow, he went to the store to buy bread and cigarettes before calling and informing his wife that he was going to the store. He was not found in the morgue until January 12, 2022. Alibek Kopbolganov’s widow, Gulshat Utegaliyeva, said: “It seems as if the corpses were collected in one place and delivered to the morgue in ‘batches.’ When he went to the store, he received three gunshot wounds in the back from which he died.

“He went to Almaty, not for a good life, but to earn money, to support his family. Alibek always thought about family and loved ones. On December 12, he turned only 55. He was still young…” Gulshat Utegaliyeva said in an interview. The authorities have not yet published lists of civilians killed and have not yet brought to justice those involved in the shootings of civilians. An independent international investigation is therefore needed.
