On January 6, 2022, an 18-year-old student of the Almaty Service College, one of the five sons in the family, Nurlybek #Turarov left the house to buy bread and was shot dead.
Going out in search of bread with a friend, they went to the bakery, as the grocery stores were closed, but there was no bread in the bakery. When driving near a gas station, their car was shot at. From the side of the gas station the military opened fire on the car, according to a friend of Nurlybek, he heard 10-15 shots. He and the driver of the car were able to duck, but Nurlybek was hit in the head by a bullet. Quickly driving away, Nurlybek’s friend and the driver got out of the car and called an ambulance, but they were told to drive themselves.
Having found a car, they went to the hospital, but it was closed and they had to go to another, but Nurlybek died instantly from gunshot wounds to the head, heart and right arm and could not be saved.
Despite the parents’ refusal, on January 22, police exhumed Nurlybek’s body for examination. Since there was no Internet on the days of the protests, his fellow students were not even aware that there was a military in the city, much less that they were shooting. It is necessary to demand that the authorities publish lists of all those killed during the January protests and that all those responsible for the shootings of civilians be held accountable.
