HE WALKED IN ON HIS OWN FEET BUT WAS TAKEN OUT DEAD
On 10 January, Yeldos KALIYEV was detained in Semey. On that day, he celebrated the birthday of his friend’s daughter, after which he left their place. When he was returning home at night, he was detained for violating the curfew and taken to a police department where his family collected his body on 12 January. His relatives were told that a grenade and a baton were found during the search, and then “he died resisting the police.” As his brother reports, Yeldos’s nose and almost all his ribs on the left side were broken; his spine was numerously stuck with something; there were horrible hematomas on his leg below the waist and on his head as well. His close friend said: “I won’t say it another way – Yeldos was killed. Based on the examination of his body, his right side, where the ribs were broken, was pressed into his body; his leg was all purple from bruises; his head was smashed. His fingers and toes were all impaled – I hadn’t seen anything like that before. Yeldos wasn’t an athletic build person; he was under 60 kg. How could they kill him so brutally? A maniac or even fascist wouldn’t do this. How could law enforcement agencies, who had taken an oath, do that?” As practice shows, detained civilians are beaten and severely tortured to make them confess to “terrorism” and “participation in mass disorders.” There are grounds to believe that Yeldos chose not to take the blame for which he was tortured to death. The refusal to incriminate yourself and being severely tortured to death afterward is interpreted as “died while resisting police” by policemen in Kazakhstan. “Yeldos was only 26 years old. He was studying at university and working as a geologist. He just got married and was planning to have children. He was respected by both the elderly and youth, his friends, co-workers, and everyone else around him because he always tried to be his best self. Now the authorities want to label him as a terrorist who had a grenade, and a baton with him found during the search. That’s not true at all.”, – his friend added.
