On January 5, 2022, 40-year-old barber Nurtas Karaneyev walked towards the new square in front of the Almaty City Akimat to take part in a peaceful protest in support of peaceful Zhanaozen protesters. But before reaching the square, at the intersection of Furmanov and Zholdasbekov streets, he received a gunshot wound to the groin area and lost consciousness. Passers-by took him to the 5th city hospital, where he was given first aid, after which he was sent to the 12th city hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
On January 8, at about 7 p.m., an armed SWAT team broke into the hospital. Nurtas was in serious condition after the operation, but SWAT officers forced him to stand up, give him up and lock his phone. The plainclothes officer did not find anything on the phone and told Nurtas to leave him, but after seeing Youtube views on Nurtas’ phone (views of videos about the rallies), he immediately said: “The fairy tale failed, pack it.” Without explaining anything, ordering him to bend in the shape of the letter “G,” Nurtas was taken outside. For any questions, he was beaten on the head and torso.
The wounded, including Nurtas, were shoved into a small police van and taken away, and for any questions or moans in pain, the officers beat the wounded with a truncheon or the butt of a machine gun. In the police van, all the wounded were forced to lower their heads, turn to the wall and close their eyes. Some were naked; the wounded were taken to the SI-18 detention center in Almaty. In their reply to the lawyer, the doctors confirmed that Nurtas had been taken from the hospital without coordination with the hospital administration, even though he needed further inpatient treatment (in the hospital).
Beating and shouting Welcome, SWAT officers led the wounded out of the police van and laid them on the cold ground with their stomachs below. If someone moved, he immediately received a blow to the head with a truncheon with the order Head down. After that, all the wounded were taken to the premises of the siZO building, where personal belongings and personal examinations were carried out. Along the corridors of the detention center, the wounded had to walk at a fast pace with their heads down, someone was forced to jump or crawl, and someone was dragged. The corridor was drenched in blood.
Nurtas was in a stressful state, experiencing dizziness from blood loss and postoperative anesthesia. Nurtas was taken away his pills and personal belongings, including money. On one of the premises of the detention center, a woman with the rank of captain conducted an interrogation, and other employees filmed him on camera and wrote something down on paper. Nurtas was taken to cell 270, which was very cold because the windows were broken.
Nurtas and about 20 other wounded men were forced to lie on the cold floor with their stomachs down with their hands behind their heads, and one of the SWAT officers hit Nurtas with the butt of a machine gun with the words, do not move. Nurtas replied to the SWAT officer that he was a simple Kazakh, not a bitch, to which the SWAT officer hit him twice with the butt of an assault rifle.
While in the cell, Nurtas heard cries of horror and despair. Interior Ministry officers forbade the wounded to lie or sit on beds, but they did not lie or sit on them because they were cold.
The cell was utterly unsanitary, adequate medical care was not provided, and there was no access to a lawyer. Since they were not given water, the wounded had to drink cold water from the tap. On January 9, the wounded were forced to stand in a cell, not allowing them to sit down. We were fed only once a day – they gave instant noodles.
Masked officers came to the cell and forced them to learn the report and sing the national anthem of Kazakhstan. Then, on January 9, an employee came to interrogate Nurtas. The staff member, who was a senior officer, said in response to one of the staff that if (the wounded) didn’t speak, “then you need to p@zd, and then wet them.”
On the night of January 9-10, Nurtas was taken to a basement room for interrogation, which an officer in civilian clothes conducted. The officer threatened Nurtas that he would be beaten. Nurtas was not allowed to read the interrogation protocols but simply forced to sign the documents. Nurtas saw traces of torture against Daulet Jabbarbekov and Akylzhan Kiysimbayev.
A guy named Asylbek Bekarys was beaten by officers in the stomach and face and spoke obscene language against him.
On January 14, Nurtas was taken to a sanitary unit, where he was forced to bandage himself. A forensic medical examiner took photographs of the beatings he suffered on January 8 after being abducted from the hospital and wounded in the groin area.
After that, Nurtas held a 5-minute trial, which imposed a preventive measure of arrest in a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation into a political criminal case under Article 272 part 2 (“participation in mass riots”). The documents on the case say that Nurtas was allegedly detained on January 12, but he was kidnapped from the hospital and brought to the detention center on January 8 – this is simply evidence of how criminal cases are fabricated.
Nurtas gave all his testimony under pressure, without the presence of a lawyer, and while not even allowing him to familiarize himself with the documents on the case, he was forced to sign some papers.
A medical examination showed that as a result of a gunshot wound to the groin area, Nurtas suffered severe harm to his health. Bruises on his torso and legs were received by Nurtas more than three days ago (the examination was done on January 14) – it turns out that he was beaten on January 8, taking him from the hospital and to detention center.
Nurtas was released on his recognizance on February 3 but did not return the keys to the apartment and money to him. The dogs of the regime, who were furious with impunity, even stole money from Nurtas.
Unfortunately, this is not the last story about people, our guys, who survived the SI-18 torture conveyor. Unfortunately, the administration of SI-18 continues to “work.”
