Civil activist and mother of two children Marua Eskendirova (date and place of birth are not indicated in the police documents), was illegally detained on the night of January 4-5, 2022, by three police officers (combating extremism department) in civilian uniform for her participation in a peaceful protest on January 4 in support of peaceful protesters in Zhanaozen. She was held by the police for about 16 hours while being given food only once. On the evening of January 5, she had a trial in a politically motivated administrative case, which sentenced her to 20 days of administrative arrest for participating in a peaceful protest on December 25, 2021. She was taken to the Police State by village Peremetnoye and placed in solitary confinement for isolation. Marua Eskendirova is being prosecuted for political reasons for participating in peaceful protests, criticizing the authorities, and a few days before the protests, she is being monitored to prevent her participation in the protest. We continue to release testimonies of human rights violations related to the January 2022 protests. Witness testimony points to gross violations of Kazakhstan’s international obligations in human rights.
