The mother of civil society activist Yernar Berikkanuly, Altyn Mukanova, appeals to the Kazakh authorities to immediately stop the political persecution and release her son. He is being illegally persecuted for participating in a peaceful protest in January 2022. She also appeals to the international community for assistance in her son’s release.

Berikkanuly Yernar was illegally detained on January 6 on his way to work. Earlier, he took part in a peaceful protest, using his constitutional right and demanding to solve the social problems of citizens, talking about high prices. After illegal detention, the man was sent to a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation into a fabricated criminal case. Recently, a politically motivated court extended his arrest for another two months.

After his arrest, Yernar’s family was not informed of his whereabouts and state of health for about 20 days. Finally, after a long search, the activist’s family hardly found him in the pre-trial detention center in Ust-Kamenogorsk.

The appeal of Yernar’s mother, Mukanova Altyn:

“My name is Mukanova Altyn, I am a pensioner and the mother of Berikkanuly Yernara. On January 6, 2022, my son was detained while he was walking to work in connection with the January events. My son participated in a peaceful rally and talked about our problems, about high prices. For this, he was

detained.

After that, we went through many difficulties. We couldn’t find it. No one told us where he was. Only 20 days after his arrest, we found him in a pre-trial detention center in Ust-Kamenogorsk. The court issued a warrant for arrest for another two months.”
