On January 5, Yermek Abdreshov, a 37-year-old auto mechanic, was injured by a grenade fragment at a January protest in Almaty and lost his sight. On the same day, he was admitted to intensive care. On January 8, he was taken away by security forces in SI-18, where he was tortured. He was released under house arrest only on January 19.

Since then, Ermek has not seen. He has the following diagnoses. Right eye: anophthalmos (absence of an eyeball). Left eye: contusion of the eyeball and orbit of the fourth degree (pathological condition of the eye after injuries). In both eyes, hemophthalmos (hemorrhage in the vessels of the retina), retinal detachment, and post-traumatic uveitis (inflammation of the inner lining of the eye).

He also has a closed craniocerebral injury, a fracture of the posterior wall of the frontal sinus on the left, and an injury to the optic nerve and visual pathways.

Yermek’s sister, Elmira Muratova, @_la_que_sabe_ said that relatives are now looking for a doctor who would take up treatment; they hope to save one eye, although Yermek’s case is considered severe. So far, they have an answer from only one Turkish clinic with a preliminary bill of 10 thousand euros.
