Testimony of Burkit Zhubanzarov, father of Ruslan Zhubanazarov, born in 1991. On January 6, 2022, Ruslan Zhubanazarov went to a peaceful protest; he did not participate in the pogroms. Ruslan was shot dead on the morning of January 7, 2022. The parents were not given a medical certificate about the cause of Ruslan’s death. Ruslan’s family could not get Ruslan’s body for almost a month. Nurotan’s employees called Ruslan’s father, offering help. However, later Nurotan and akimat officers told Ruslan’s father not to look for the cause of Ruslan’s death, thereby confirming that law enforcers illegally shot him. After almost three months, the perpetrators have not yet been arrested and brought to justice; Ruslan’s father, Burkit Zhubanazarov, demands to find those responsible for the murder of his son. I am Zhubanazarov Burkit from the village of Monke bi, Shalkar district, Aktobe region. My son, Ruslanbek Zhubanazarov, born in 1991, was shot dead on January 7, 2022, in Aktobe during a peaceful protest. After we learned about the death of our son, we were told that the body of our son would be given only to his parents, and we had to go to Aktobe (our village is located 300 km from Aktobe).

But in Aktobe, Police officers, and among them Deputy Investigator Asset Kaliyev, said that his son’s body would not be given away because he was a terrorist. To our bewilderment that we were parents and why we could not get our son’s body, the answer was: “Your son is a terrorist. His body is not betrayed. Let’s bury him like a bum. And if necessary, we will shoot at you.” At the same time, it was “fashionable” to threaten all objections with death. With tears in our eyes, we went home. We began to learn about the state of affairs; we were told different things, and in the end, we did not even know what to think and do.

We were shocked mentally and physically. Time passed between trips to Aktobe and back, but our son’s body was not given to us, and we did not even know who to turn to. In the ROVD, Bisebayev Berik said the same thing, your son is a terrorist, and his body is not handed over. Already the time was passing by 40 days from the day of my son’s death, 28 days had passed, and I decided to go to Aktobe again to see whether my son’s body would be given away or not. My wife and I are completely exhausted, losing our son and not having the opportunity to bury him, to bury him- it’s very the soul.

Every day, seeing and hearing the pleas and tears of a mother who has lost her son is even harder. And after 28 days after my son’s death, I got a call from Nurotan telling me to write an application to receive my son’s body from the morgue and that we would help you with this. Arriving in Aktobe, he left a statement addressed to Yerbol Danagulov (first deputy chairman of the Aktobe regional branch of the Nurotan party). Danagulov said that you could get your son’s body from the morgue in the afternoon during the conversation.

Both the employees of Nurotan and the staff of the akimat and the morgue began to convince me not to look for the causes of death because the main thing was to get my son’s body, as if they paid me billions for it. So I kept quiet to get my son’s body. An imam had already been invited to the morgue to read the zhanaz so that I would immediately bury my son on my return to the village.

Although contrary to the Muslim rite, I resigned myself to this, the zhanaz should not be read near the morgue and without taking the ritual ablution of those present (my relatives and friends of my son were with me). The imam read the zhanaz in 1-2 minutes, put 40,000 tenge in his pocket, and left. We got our son’s body and went home. Upon arrival, the akim of auyl began to ask about the funeral, and the next day the akim of the district and other persons arrived, and with a small number of people, we buried our son. With great difficulty, we were still able to bury our son and bury his body to the ground. Radio Azattyk also informed about this.

Now I want to state my demands. My son left for Aktobe on January 6; he was not in the pogroms; he participated in a peaceful rally with friends and was shot dead on January 7. There are witnesses to this. Then on TV, the prosecutor’s office reported that a terrorist had been killed in Aktobe, so shamelessly slandering my son. I think because of my repeated speeches and broadcasts, the authorities decided to give me my son’s body.

Now I demand to find the killer of my son. Two months have passed, the third month has already passed, and the investigation is not underway. My son’s clothes and his phone are not given to us. It’s not clear why? After the death of his son, his mobile phone was turned on for 13 days. When we called the mobile phone, the calls came, and since we were not given our son’s body, we were already beginning to doubt his death. They began to think maybe he would come back, perhaps they were mistaken, and he is alive because it was also the case when we were told from the ROVD that your son’s body was taken to Akzhar near Aktobe. We found out that there was no funeral at this address. It was like bullying by law enforcement.

I am outraged; what is happening in our country at all? When the elders of the two districts organized a round table with the akim of the region Orazalin, the akim did not come to this meeting. The elders wanted to get a solution so that my son’s body would be given to us, his parents. Although the akim himself declared that he was the only akim of the region where the protests were held peacefully, and there were no terrorists.

Does he not know about the shooting of my son? Where did they invent one terrorist in my son? He knows everything. And now Orazalin has resigned from the post of akim. Why can he leave without answering for everything that happened? All responsible persons must be punished! Why should I be the only one suffering in this situation? Just as I suffer, so must they suffer. But, of course, this cannot go on forever; the situation will change.

The time will come; I believe that we will restore justice. And now I demand to find the killer of my son! Please bring my voice to the world! I will not back down from my demands! Now we are not given the initial medical examination of death. Sometimes they demand some papers from the prosecutor’s office, the investigative department, and then a lawyer’s appearance. We live 300 km from Aktobe; it is not easy for us old people to go back and forth.

Is it not possible to assist humanly and give all the documents relating to my son, his clothes, phone, and personal belongings. Is it possible that someone from the region’s leadership will not tell law enforcement agencies to treat my case with understanding and search for the killer of my son? I’m terrified of it all. Where is the humanity? I’m not going to back down for anything now! Even if I am killed. I demand to find the killer of my son
