A civil activist and father of two, Okhasov has been persecuted for political reasons since 2016 for participating in peaceful protests and criticizing the Kazakh authorities. In March 2021, the authorities threatened to kill his son, and two attempted murders were made against Orynbay Ohasov himself. In November 2021, Orynbay Okhasov was sentenced to 1 year of restriction of freedom for allegedly “participating in the activities of an extremist organization” for participating in peaceful protests and criticizing the authorities.
The probation service filed a motion to replace the restriction of liberty with imprisonment for allegedly violating the conditions of probation control – participation in a protest in Uralsk on January 4, 2022. Orynbai Ohasov himself denies participating in the peaceful protest. At the same time, it is worth noting that even if he took part in a peaceful protest, this is his constitutional right. The authorities are violating their international human rights obligations by portraying the democratization process.
