The story of a 38-year-old doctor by education Kosai Makhanbayev from Almaty. He was wounded in the legs, survived torture, and risks going to jail in a political criminal case.  On January 4 and 5, 2022, Kosai Makhanbayev participated in a peaceful protest in Almaty, did not participate in the pogroms, and was urged not to participate in clashes with the police. On January 5, he suffered gunshot wounds to the legs outside Nazarbayev’s residence in Almaty. Other protesters took him to the hospital, where he received medical attention.  On the evening of January 8, an armed SWAT broke into the 12th city hospital (where he was staying) and beat the half-naked wounded to crawl to the exit from the hospital. All this time, SWAT officers called the wounded terrorists, rapists, and murderers. About 15 wounded, including Kosai, were shoved into a police van and taken to the SI-18 detention center in Almaty. The wounded crawled down the corridor and were trampled by officers in camouflage clothing and tibia boots.

Kosai crawled to the cell on four floors. In turn, the wounded were taken out for questioning, beaten, and forced to give false statements against themselves. All the while, Kosai heard screaming and crying. The wounded were either naked or half-naked, in cold cells, without bedding; food was rarely given and one portion for several people.

Every 15 minutes, they were beaten (kicked, beaten with their hands, their heads were beaten on a metal bed). The torture took place for several days. The scythe had his liver damaged, his ribs were broken, he was urinating blood and coughing up blood, and the wound was infected. Bleeding profusely, he sat in the basement on the cold floor and answered the investigator’s questions for almost 4 hours. Investigators did not listen when he spoke as a civilian and not a terrorist but only threatened and accused that the wounded allegedly killed people, cut off the heads of two, and raped girls from 7 hospitals. A lawyer was not provided, as was adequate medical care.

On January 14, the court-appointed two months of arrest during the investigation into the political criminal case of “mass riots.” On February 10, he was released on his recognizance, but the case was not closed. More than one employee was arrested in the torture case, even though Kosai told the prosecutor from Astana about the torture on January 29.
