Islam Askarov

On January 5, like hundreds of residents of Semey, Islam went out in a peaceful protest to support the demands of the Zhanaozen people. At the rally, he was filming on a camera, as evidenced by the video on his phone.

At about 20:00, a crowd of peaceful people began to shoot, and Islam was hit by a bullet directly in the leg. The bullet took off, and he lost a lot of blood, but unknown people helped him, put him in a car, and took him to the hospital. Since the bullet had flown out, Islam’s hospital simply examined him, sewed up the wound, and sent him home.

The next day, Islam went for a dressing; he was X-rayed and had a broken bone. A cast was applied, and crutches were prescribed.

On January 8, 2 investigators arrived at Islam’s house. They interviewed Islam and left, and at 22:30, they arrived again, but with four OMON cars with machine guns in their hands. They illegally detained Islam without good reason.

On January 9, at 3 p.m., a lawyer called Islam’s mother and said Islam had been taken to jail after interrogation. During his time there, Islam was severely beaten and tortured. They hit him all over his body, on the shot leg with his own crutch.

Islam later told his mother, “I didn’t know that iron crutches could bend until they beat me.”

Islam has been in jail for two months. He is beaten to this day but periodically smeared with creams to make the bruises pass faster.
